Pool Lighting Regulations for Public Pools

Swimming pools, especially public pools must have proper swimming pool lights. Pool lights are more needed at night since it is dark and it is important that everything that it happening around the pool is monitored. In installing pool lights, there are certain criteria for pool lighting and electrical wiring that the pool owner or operator must meet in order for the permits to be approved.

The following are some of those standards that must be followed:
  • If the swimming pool is both used during the day and night, swimming pool decks must be well-lighted at night. Public pools are required of doing this because insufficient lighting in the pool deck may cause accidents at night. Also, dressing rooms, pool steps and ladders, and other walkways must also be lighted. Lights must not be too dim or too bright, it should be just right.
  • In electrical wiring, swimming pools need to meet the standards set by the National Electrical Code (NEC). They set different standards about different electrical wiring in different areas of the swimming pool.
  • For underwater lighting, the required lights must be not less than 500w/100w per square foot of the surface area of the swimming pool. Indoor and outdoor swimming pools must also have adequate lighting (can be artificial lights) for the maindrains to be always visible.

Lighting Areas for Swimming Pool

The main purpose in installing swimming pool lights in the pool area is for safety especially when you want to use the swimming pool at night. On the other hand, swimming pool lights also add ambiance and attraction to the pool area when installed with designs and patterns. In line with this importance that the pool light can bring, the following are the different areas where you can install you pool lights:

Inside the Swimming Pool
This area is the most needed when safety is your priority because as you install pool lights inside the water, you can easily see if there is someone or anything in the pool water. This can greatly help when swimming at night to avoid bumping and other accidents. It is important to have lights in the entire pool especially in the edges and corner of the pool. For more aesthetic, you can use lights with colors (just make sure that the color is bright).

Outside the Swimming Pool
Placing pool lights outside the pool is less about safety (though is also considered on the stone edges) but is more about the beauty and ambiance of the pool area. If you have trees and some shrubs around, enhance it by putting lights around it. Lighted fountains will greatly enhance the magnificence of the area. Walkways should also be lighted for safety and more beauty also. In the pathways, you can also place colorful lights to make the area more attractive and safe.

In the Pool Deck/Wall
Pool lights can also be placed in the pool decks or in the walls. Colorful and bright lights can improve the plain walls and decks at night and can even bring more splendor to the a swimming pool.

Cleaning a Cartridge-Type Pool Filter

Having  a swimming pool offers a lot of fun and enjoyment. On the other hand, its maintenance can somehow be expensive. One of the things that a pool owner must remember is to maintain the pool's cleanliness by having a clean pool filter. To those who can afford to buy new ones every time it is full of dirt, it is good. To those who cannot and wants to secure the cleanliness of the pool always, cleaning the pool filter regularly is a better option. Here's how to do it:

  • Buy a good quality cartridge-type filter. A good quality filter cartridge has pleats that are not paper. It can either be a fiberglass mat or synthetic filter media.
  • Remove the cartridge. When water in the pool becomes dirty, remove the pool filter cartridge from the pump-filter assembly.

  • Clean the cartridge carefully. Use some chemicals that can be bought in any pool store to clean your filter cartridge. Rinse it carefully using a garden hose and spray nozzle to totally remove the debris.
  •  Allow the filter cartridge to dry. It is better if it will be placed under the sun because it is an effective way to kill algae.
  • Put the cartridge back into the pool filter. Reuse the pool filter using the newly-cleaned cartridge.
